Tipping norms are cultural rather than mathematical, and they vary enormously. In the United States, sit-down restaurant service is generally tipped between 15% and 20%, with 18% a common middle ground and more for exceptional service or a large party. In much of Europe a service charge is frequently included in the bill and rounding up or leaving 5–10% is plenty. In Japan, tipping is generally not practised at all and can be received as awkward. Because of this variation, the calculator does not push a "correct" figure — it simply gives you the arithmetic for whatever percentage the situation calls for.

A recurring question is whether to tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount. Tipping on the pre-tax subtotal is the more traditional approach, since tax is money the restaurant never sees, but many people simply use the bill total for the sake of simplicity — on a typical check the difference amounts to a small fraction of the tip. This tool applies your percentage to whatever number you type in the bill field, so you control which figure the tip is based on. If you want the stricter version, enter the subtotal rather than the total charged.

When a bill is split, small rounding decisions can create awkward shortfalls. Dividing a total of 87.43 between three people gives 29.1433 each, and if everyone hands over 29 the table is more than a unit short. The round-up option exists precisely for this: it lifts the grand total to the next whole number before dividing, which usually produces a cleaner per-person figure and quietly increases the tip rather than reducing it. The tool always shows the effective tip percentage after rounding, so you can see exactly what the generosity ended up being rather than guessing. And when the party ordered very unevenly, remember that an even split is a social choice, not a mathematical one — in that case calculate each person's share of the food first and apply the same percentage to each.
